Mount Nittany Vineyard... This was my first experience with this winery.I was familiar with the area and Oh Yes... the Lions. Although not a football fan I grew up listening to uncles and and cousins screaming at the television set about the Nittany Lions. "Go Penn State!" What is a Nittany Lion? you may very well ask... Well Pennsylvania had Mountain Lions until the 1880's. The word around Nittany-town is that there are still the occasional sighting of the rare cat... Fact or Fiction? This inquiring mind would rather talk about wine. Nittany Mountain White: A Semi Dry Table Wine... says the vineyard! I contacted Mount Nittany, and they revealed to me that this wine is a blend of Seyval, Vidal, and Cayuga (all hybrid grapes). The color of this wine, I would describe as light straw, and at first glance I would have guessed it to be a Pinot Grigio or Sauv Blanc. On the nose it was crisp and refreshingly floral. I could smell its sweet tones from a foot away.I was truly surprised by this wine once it got beyond my lips. I thought perhaps this wine might be syrupy and oppressively sweet... I was flat wrong. There is wonderful clarity to its florally fruity tones, and I would say that it is styled in the direction of German whites. A slight effervescence topped off the whole experience beautifully.I wouldn't think twice about keeping this in my personal wine rack. I would classify squarely as a "Fun and Kicky" wine. Try pairing it with heavily blued cheeses such as Stilton or enjoy it on its own... A great summer sunset wine.
