Most people can’t say it, and fewer people can spell it! Gewurztraminer… What is it?
Gewurztraminer is a grape predominantly grown in Germany, but is showing up more frequently at American wineries. California’s Fetzer vineyard’s offering in this varietal is quite a tasty morsel and hold’s up against its more traditional counterparts in Germany.

In the nose, this wine is floral plain and simple. The Winery claims rose petals and honeysuckle. I don’t know if I can get that specific, but you may definitely feel the urge to dab a bit behind each ear. In the mouth there is an initial texture and consistency of light syrup. This wine tastes much like it smells with an additional under note of oranges. There is an also a zing of spice on the end of this wine which was a wonderful little surprise.

The First Mate and I paired this with a meal of Creole Shrimp and Gorgonzola Baked Butternut Squash. The Sweet edge of the wine cut well with both the Gorgonzola and the Creole spices alike.

I’d refer to this as a “Sneaky Wine”. Your first thought may be to chalk this up to just one more sweet white, but I assure you that there is much more to it than pure sugar. This is a great transition wine. Transition wines are perfect for people who think that they only like a certain American Sweet Blush (Pink) wine. This is a perfect wine for the individual that enjoys all sorts of wine and may be searching for something off the beaten path. Don’t be afraid to use this wine as an alternative to more expensive Aperitif Wines, paring with spicy dinners, or as an after dinner dessert.

Bottom Line… Go Buy Some. The Price is right, and after the bottle is empty you make a game out of trying to say Gewurztraminer!
