A sweet surprise, and summer sipper!Back in the early 90’s, I used to see signs for Clover Hill as I was speeding through back country roads on my way to college. It never dawned on me to stop and check it out. Wine wasn’t really my bag back then… Thank God things change!VIGNOLES… How do you say it? Vig-Noles… Vin-Yo-Lays… I prefer the second (even if its wrong it still sound more exotic). What is it (besides a grape)? It is a hybrid grape created back in the 1920’s by a French chap name J.F. Ravat. He was famous for his hybrids, and all of them had numerical designations. This one was dubbed Ravat 51, a.k.a. Vignoles. It is a combination of Seibel and Pinot Noir… Yes I said Pinot Noir. This wine is floral. With impressions of Honeydew and reminded me of childhood hikes through fields of wildflowers with my aunt. There is an edge cutting sweetness in the mouth. It is truly a desert wine. Veins of Pear and Apple, a well balanced citrus note, and a slight effervescence keep the whole package spritely. This is a thicker wine. It leaves a pleasant remnant in the mouth that lasts. This is an easy alternate for more expensive dessert wines without sacrificing a drop of quality. The winery says for a daring pairing trying it with Blue Cheese. I agree… It was delightful.
