Sycamore Lane Merlot...It tastes nothing like a the tree, but then again I never went around licking sycamores for a taste reference. Perhaps I might be surprised. This wine is inexpensive ($3.49 to be exact). So of course the logical mind might chalk it up to undrinkable swill. I say, The Rogue Sommelier is no logical fellow (Live and Prosper). And really, could a $3.49 experiment go wrong? Well Heck Yes! But that's another story for another time. So at a price I could not refuse... I cracked the bottle. In the sun the wine exibits ruby hues, and has a thicker texture than I expected. There is a significant berry and flower component on the nose and it takes a slight herbaceous right turn after some time in the air. The mouth is layered full of more berries and oak notes with a hint of chocolate (perhaps it was vanilla). This wine does not stay around long on the finish... So as I always say "Another Sip... Shall We!" The Final Word: This wine is competent on its own, but should really be paired with the proper food or cheese to enhance it respectable structure. It's simple yet elegant label belies its price. A perfect bottle to keep on hand as a host gift. I find that the gift of wine can smooth the way and open many doors.R.S.
