Oak Leaf Merlot (Walmart Exclusive) Here's one that I was skeptical of at first. I had heard a while back that Walmart was going to carry its' own wine. Many of us heard the jokes and received the email lists of possible names for "Walmart Wine". Living in Pennsylvania, we can not get this wine at our local Walmarts. While I was in Virginia recently, I stopped in at a Walmart to get some provisions. As I swung past the wine section I heard two other tourists comment on the price of a wine. Could I have heard right? Did that guy just say $2.97 a bottle. Yes!... I did hear him right. I could smell an experiment brewing. There it was, Oak Leaf Wines, this was the wine that I had heard about and dismissed. If you've read any of my reviews, you know that I can not pass up the opportunity to try anything inexpensive. Well we grabbed a bottle of the Pinot Grigio and the Merlot and ran for the hills! We first tried the Pinot Grigio, and sadly I must admit that even for a $2.97 bottle of PG I think it's best left on the shelf. There was no finish and it was a bit watery (don't get me wrong if someone put a glass of it in my hand I could probably still get it past my lips). This did not give me high hopes for the Merlot, but I decided to uncork it anyway. This wine on the other hand drinks better than the price tag. It is perhaps not a stand alone wine, but it makes a perfect wine for what i like to call "low rent pairings"... Pizza, Burgers, Cheese Steaks Etc. There are things going on in this Merlot... not a lot but something. If you're on a budget, and you want to put together a decent dinner for your sweetie don't think twice putting this with some pasta and meat sauce, Garlic Bread, and Cheese... or just pop it into a picnic basket and head for you favorite shady spot. Table Wine at it's best!
