As I strolled the isles of my favorite market in VA Beach, my attention was drawn to a bright yellow label. Was it Yellow Tale? No! No! Could it be… Something Different? Yes! Mattie, a new furry mascot! Once again proving that marketing and point of sale tactics work, Mattie’s Perch Shiraz has an aboriginal styled Kuala on the label. While the label caught my eye, it as the price tag that sealed the deal. On Sale 3 bottles for $10… How could I resist? I could not. I’m fully aware that cute and fuzzy mascot wines can become quite vicious, rabid, generally unruly, and turn on us in an instant. Would this be the case with Mattie the Kuala? Lets find out!

First thing of note, there was no vintage year on the bottle. A sure sign that this wine is meant for drinking now. Don’t cellar this wine, don’t even put in the basement overnight… In fact don’t even put it near anything that resembles steps. Get it home and open it straight away. The color is a pleasing ruby red, and I would state that the nose had a smoky laced berry quality with an alcoholic undertone. Ah! But in the mouth I found it to be smoky with hints of sweet chocolate, with a mouthfeel of juice filled velvet. I say “ring it out and take a swig for yourself”. I paired this wine with steaks stuffed with blue cheese and shrimp… and it was good. The wine finished with a pleasing jamminess that lingered in the back of the mouth.

This is a young bold Shiraz at an outstanding price. If your tastes lean in that direction, or if you want to discover what your taste is and don’t want blow a lot of coin then I certainly recommend making Mattie your Perch
