$ 12.99 Los Vascos Reserve Cabernet
Then look no further than this 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. Yes, its from that same "Rothschild" family that has been corking snooty wines in France since 1868. Well, one branch of the family was banished to Chile a score of years ago and found some vineyards that have been languishing since 1736. Bringing their magic touch to the old vines, they have been producing some exceptionally affordable wines there since 1988. So on to the fancy words! On first impression this wine has a distinct ruby red color. It is not cloudy or inky in any way, but has decent legs within the glass. On the nose, I found it to be full of smoke, earth and spice with a woody quality. There is also considerable amount of fruit in the nose, but I found it masked by these other wonderful traits. After my initial tasting and notes I decided it was time to hit this wine with some cheese. It paired well with some Spanish Drunken Goat Cheese and really enhanced the latest episode of CSI Miami that I was watching with the First Mate. This is an exceptional wine that gets even better as the night wears on. It should be enjoyed throughout an evening on it’s own, with cheese, or a meal. At $12.99 (PA) this is a reasonable offering with enough chops to pass the venerable “impress the date” test. A touch of affordable class for any event. 2005 Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Colchagua Province Chile Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite
