Shenandoah VineyardsThe Rouge Meets Some Rebels

Perhaps one of the easiest vacation destinations to find, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is split in half by RT 81 and RT11. From its' rolling hills to its' Civil War history the Valley has something to offer every palate.

Boasting the driest climate east of the Mississippi, the valley plays host to a number of wineries. One of which, Shenandoah Vineyards, we had the pleasure to visit on our latest tour. Owned and operated by Emma Randel, Shenandoah is the oldest winery in the valley, and the third oldest in the state.

The winery is located off of RT42 on 26 acres of land once owned by Emma's Grandfather. Originally an orchard dating back to the 1890's, the vineyard is now planted with vine stock. The vines were brought in from Maryland and Michigan, and grown by Philip Wagner, a man well known creating fine French/American Hybrids.

When asked, Emma Randel stated that she no favorites among her wines. "They're all my children" she said laughing. The care with which her wines are crafted is obvious. The vineyard is overseen by winemaker Fredrick Burroughs, but Emma still has the final word. She and her husband, James B Randel started the vineyard in 1976 after moving back to the family land after 30 years in New Jersey. James Randel's background in engineering was a benefit in the early period of the winery, but Emma admits that their first attempt was less than spectacular.

Their wine has come a long way since those early days. It is a vineyard with a wine for every palate. Shenandoah has an impressive lineup that is ready for sampling in their beautiful tasting room/retail shop. We enjoyed both the Chardonnay and the Shenandoah Blanc (a blend), but the Riesling stood out as my capital choice. Among the reds, Emma's Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chambourcin blew me away. I was quite pleased by the easy drinking qualities of Shenandoah's Rebel Red, a wine that Emma states is her number one Summer Seller.

Emma Randel is a warm and gracious host, and her winery reflects this. Should you find yourself in the area, or are planning a trip to Virginia Wine Country be sure to stop by Shenandoah Vinyards to see Emma Randel and sample some of her excellent wines.
